CHRIS's Philosphy
Motivation is a myth. Real change comes from within, and with the right support, anyone can achieve their goals. Chris’s approach is rooted in honesty, education, and a deep understanding of both the physical and mental aspects of endurance sports.
Background
I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, growing up in a small town and on the farm. A near-death experience in grade eight led me to running, where my school coach first guided me and later referred me to the Regina Harriers under the late Dr. Steve Gersten. I quickly progressed and found success in both track and cross country, enjoying a strong high school running career. At the time, I believed that was the end of competitive running, and as I entered the working world, my focus shifted away from the sport.

Personal Transformation
Life took a darker turn for many years as I fell into unhealthy habits. I became sedentary, struggled with daily drinking and drug use, and eventually reached almost 300 pounds. These choices led to poor health and difficult relationships. In 2016, I decided it was time for change. I started losing weight and running again, until a torn Achilles tendon stopped me in my tracks. That injury humbled me and taught me the consequences of improper training. After six months of self-guided rehab and study, I regained my ability to walk and move normally, though I thought my running days were behind me.
In late 2018, I chose not to accept that fate. By February 2019, I recommitted to transforming my life. I returned to running, dropped 55 pounds in just over two months, and proved my resilience by running over 70 km through a blizzard eight months later. That experience solidified my philosophy: with knowledge, drive, and consistency, anything is possible.
Coaching Today
After years of ultramarathoning and continued self-education, I knew I wanted to give back to the running community that helped me. I became a certified run coach through the RRCA and, in early 2024, expanded my skills further by earning my Personal Trainer Certification through ISSA. Today, I combine my personal journey, technical knowledge, and passion for the sport to help others achieve their goals, whether that means starting their fitness journey, chasing new personal records, or simply building consistency for a healthier life.

Bringing Ultra to the Community
Chris has also given back to the running community by helping launch Lost Our Marbles, Saskatchewan’s first indoor ultra event, which quickly became a unique test of endurance for local athletes. He’s now adding that same ultra-running spirit to the long-standing Flatlanders race, introducing new challenges while keeping the tradition alive for runners of all levels.

LOST OUR MARBLES
A unique indoor ultra event designed to bring the running community together, Lost Our Marbles is as much about mental strength as physical endurance. Inspired by Chris’s own journey and a commitment to mental health awareness, this event challenges participants in a fun, supportive atmosphere, complete with actual marbles to track your progress. Whether you’re running 3, 6, or 12 hours, you’ll find camaraderie, purpose, and a few laughs along the way.
FLATLANDERS
With over 30 years of history, Flatlanders is a cornerstone of the local running scene. Now co-directed by Chris, the event is evolving to include new ultra-distance options while preserving its inclusive, community-driven spirit. From kids’ miles to competitive 12-hour races, Flatlanders welcomes runners of all ages and abilities. Enjoy a festival atmosphere with food trucks, vendors, and a focus on giving back to the community.

Chris’ training addressed multiple aspects of running (most of which were new to me!) including heart rate training, speed and tempo days, increased distance, hydration, and fuelling. His attention to detail and his custom approach to my goals was unmatched by any running coaches I had worked with before and I saw results quickly!
